💎 What is a fabrial?

A fabrial is a Rosharan gadget powered by Stormlight. A craftsperson (an artifabrian) traps a small spren inside a cut gemstone, then builds a metal frame around it. The kind of spren decides what the device does — heat, pull, push, link to a partner — and the metals fine-tune the effect. Spanreeds, clocks, heaters and painrials are everyday tech; a few ancient fabrials like Soulcasters are priceless relics (Handbook p.262; World Guide p.20).

Charges

A fabrial holds a set number of charges — think of them as uses. Switching one on usually takes the Interact action and spends 1 charge. Some work once per charge; others keep burning a charge per hour or per day until you touch them to switch off. At 0 charges it stops — if it was holding you up a wall or in the air, you fall (Handbook pp.241, 262).

Recharging

During a short rest (an hour of downtime) you can drain infused loose gems into it — 1 gem = 1 charge, about 2 mk each — or a Radiant can pour in Stormlight, 1 Investiture per charge. Leaving it out in a highstorm refills it completely, just like spheres. Doing this doesn't cost you the rest's normal recovery (Handbook pp.241, 257, 299).

Spheres need a tuning fork

Your purse spheres are sealed in glass, so on their own they can't recharge a fabrial. A tuning fork (50 mk) lets you use spheres as if they were loose gems (Handbook p.260). Half-shards and Shardplate are hungry: 5 gems per charge (about 10 mk).

Stormlight fades

Infused spheres hold their Light for about 5 days; loose gems go dun within several days. Stock up after a highstorm, not a week before you need it (Handbook pp.242, 260).

💠 Marks & sphere values

Prices in the game are all in one unit: the diamond mark (“mk”). Spheres come in three sizes — a chip is a fifth of a mark, a mark, and a broam worth four marks — and a sphere set with a richer gem is worth more (Handbook p.242).

GemChipMarkBroam
Diamond0.214
Garnet, heliodor, topaz1520
Ruby, smokestone, zircon21040
Amethyst, sapphire525100
Emerald1050200

Values in diamond marks. Example: an emerald broam is worth 200 mk — enough for two spanreed pairs.

🛒 How to get a fabrial
Buy one

Standard fabrials have a list price — from 100 mk for a spanreed pair to 2,000 mk for a half-shard. What's for sale depends on where you are, so ask your GM what the local shops carry. Starting kits carry only a small purse (the Artisan kit has 4d8 mk, Handbook p.243), so most fabrials are something you save up for or earn.

Have one crafted

Anyone with a fabrial-crafting expertise and the right tools can build a standard fabrial. The materials cost half the list price (gem and spren included), and the work goes at about 100 mk of value per workday: a spanreed pair takes about 1 day, a painrial about 7½ days, a repeller about 15. The crafter rolls Crafting; good rolls (Opportunities) speed it up and bad ones (Complications) slow it down (Handbook pp.265–267).

Craft it yourself

Scholars who take the Artifabrian talents get better at this: cheaper materials, faster work, and the chance to invent one-of-a-kind fabrials (Handbook pp.106–110). The gems for unique fabrials can't be bought — talk to your GM about unique fabrials.

Find or earn one

Fabrials and fabrial-quality gems turn up as rewards. Some — Soulcasters, Suppressors, Shardplate — can only be found or awarded, never bought (Handbook pp.255, 281–282).

Running costs
Ways to rechargeCostGood to know
Infused loose gem
2 mk per charge
Done during a short rest. Loose gems go dun in a few days.
Purse spheres + tuning fork
50 mk once for the fork
Without a fork, spheres can't recharge fabrials.
A Radiant's Stormlight
0 mk
1 Investiture = 1 charge, during a short rest.
Highstorm
0 mk
Leave it out and it refills completely (Handbook p.241).
Half-shard or Shardplate
10 mk per charge
Needs 5 gems or 5 Investiture per charge.

Examples: keeping a spanreed running for a month is about 12 mk; refilling a liferial after three heals is 6 mk; an attractor running an 8-hour workday burns 8 charges (16 mk) — more than it holds, so plan a top-up.

⚙ Fabrial types — what they do for you

Most modern fabrials alter something, pair two things, or warn you; a few newer inventions fit none of these (World Guide pp.20–22).

Altering
Augmenters

Turn a property up — more heat, more force, more protection. Heatrials and the half-shard are augmenters.

Altering
Diminishers

Turn a property down. Most painrials are diminishers — they take the edge off pain so you can keep going.

Pairing
Conjoiners

Two halves of a split gem that move together over any distance. Spanreeds are conjoiners: write with one and the other writes too.

Pairing
Reversers

Split gems that move opposite each other — raise one half and the other drops. They hold up the suspended archery towers on the Shattered Plains. There's no reverser item to buy in the Handbook.

Warning
Alerters

Warn you when chosen people, materials or Stormlight use come close — a fabrial burglar alarm.

Other
Clocks

Keep perfect time, powered by a logicspren.

Other
Attractors & repellers

Slowly draw one substance in (water, smoke) or push one away (wood, stone). Great for chores and clever setups, not for yanking weapons out of hands.

Ancient & new
Soulcasters, suppressors & inventions

Ancient relics copy Radiant surges, and modern Artifabrians keep inventing one-off devices. These are rare and can't simply be bought.

📘 Official fabrials catalog

Every fabrial with rules in the Stormlight Handbook, in our own words. Recharge costs assume the usual 2 mk per charge from an infused loose gem — a Radiant's Stormlight or a highstorm costs nothing. Check the page reference for the full rules.

Flavour-only fan ideas (no game rules)

💡 Using fabrials creatively
  1. Make your Radiant the battery. During a short rest a Radiant can pour Stormlight into your fabrials, 1 Investiture per charge — no gems needed (Handbook p.241).
  2. Recharge on every short rest. Topping up doesn't cost you the rest's recovery, so there's no reason to start a fight half-empty (Handbook p.299).
  3. Hang them out in a highstorm. Fabrials refill completely in a highstorm, just like spheres (Handbook p.241). Plan big jobs for right after one.
  4. Think beyond combat. An emotion bracelet wins negotiations, a cultivator grows instant cover or a ladder, a cremrial softens a wall, an attractor clears smoke from a room.
  5. Mind the spanreed's limits. Spanreeds only work while both halves sit still — set up your messages before you board the ship (Handbook p.264).
  6. Charged fabrials are Invested. While they hold charge they're harder to affect with surges, and they can be seen from the Cognitive Realm (Handbook pp.237, 241).
  7. Fabrials can give you away. Some spren react loudly to fabrials being switched on; in enemy-held places, think twice before switching one on (World Guide p.18).
  8. Count your Light. Where Stormlight is scarce — like Shadesmar — every charge matters, so carry spare gems and decide what's worth spending on (World Guide p.176).
